The Flourishing Fabric

Uncovering the Hidden Thread – From Polarisation and Disconnection to Flourishing Together

In a world marked by polarisation, fragile trust, a youth mental health crisis and increasing geopolitical tensions, the question is no longer whether to act, but how to orient toward renewal and flourishing together. What are pathways, interventions and narratives that policy makers, professionals, business and civil society leaders can design to make this happen?

The Flourishing Fabric presents new international Glocalities research that uncovers an often overlooked dimension of human experience: the movement between disconnection and flourishing. Going beyond visible ideological divides, the report reveals a shared inner landscape that cuts across worldviews, cultures, and generations.

A new lens on lived experience: Disconnection ↔ Flourishing

At the heart of the publication is the Disconnection–Flourishing dimension: a validated, international research scale that measures existential disconnection (such as isolation, instability, and loss of meaning) versus flourishing (psychosocial integration, vitality, purpose, and belonging).

A crucial discovery is that this dimension operates independently of ideological orientation. It is statistically separate from the Glocalities Control–Freedom dimension that explains political and cultural polarization. As a result, disconnection and flourishing can be identified within any worldview - conservative or progressive - revealing shared human dynamics beneath division and offering rare common ground for dialogue, resilience, and renewal.

Global research, with a deep U.S. focus

The report draws on largescale, representative Glocalities survey data from 29 countries (n = 113,561), including an indepth analysis of the United States (n = 5,722).

Key findings include:

  • Disconnection and flourishing are universal human experiences, present across cultures and ideologies.
  • Young adults are most at risk of disconnection, regardless of worldview.
  • Even among the most disconnected groups, strong aspirational values emerge, such as imagination, wisdom, compassion, creativity, and freedom.
  • Flourishing is closely linked to trust, resilience, agency and a sense of contribution.

These patterns are consistent across countries and align closely with other international flourishing research, reinforcing the robustness of the findings.

From discovery to interpretation: making sense of disconnection and flourishing

Beyond empirical analysis, The Flourishing Fabric translates data into insight using three interpretive lenses:

  • The Hero’s Journey – disconnection as a transition phase rather than an end state
  • Jung’s individuation – flourishing as the capacity to integrate opposing forces
  • Entropy - syntropy – flourishing as a systemic movement from fragmentation toward coherence

Together, these perspectives help move from diagnosis to design, offering pathways for organisations, communities, policymakers, educators, and leaders seeking to strengthen trust, agency, and resilience.

From insight to cocreated pathways to flourishing

Our Glocalities experts work in close co‑creation with organisations, supported by the Glocalities Data and AI Platform, to translate these insights into audience‑specific engagement strategies, narratives, communications, and interventions. Grounded in comparative research data across 29 countries, we support the co‑creation of concrete pathways to flourishing across values segments, citizen groups, worldviews, and cultural contexts.
