How to Outplay the Authoritarian Playbook

Harnessing Data and Innovation to Empower Civil Society

How can NGOs and the social impact sector respond and counter the tactics that have fueled the resurgence of authoritarian power?

The USAID crisis is just one symptom of a much bigger issue: the ability of authoritarian leaders to shape public discourse and dominate the narrative. Donald Trump's return to office has deepened the challenges faced by the social impact sector and civil society worldwide. His campaign successfully reached not only disillusioned young men and conservatives but also moderate and middle-ground voters. What lies beneath Trump's success? Which deeper psychological archetypes and trends are reflected in his strategy and messaging? How can we crack the code of his rhetorical power and learn the lessons needed to reconnect with society at large? Together with Resource Alliance and Amnesty International Argentina Glocalities organized an online keynote and discussion session on February 19. The session had more than 700 registrations as the topic is timely and  relevant for many NGO’s and the social impact sector at large.

Cracking the code of Trump’s rhetoric with Glocalities data and AI

The event kicked off with a data-driven international diagnosis of polarization and its effects based on a decade of Glocalities research. Research Director Martijn Lampert shared recent Glocalities insights into Trump’s rhetorical power, the rise of autocrats, the gender gap, shifting psychographic profiles of Gen Z audiences, and the mechanisms of modern persuasion. His talk included an analysis of archetypes present in Trump’s inauguration speech and comparisons with the inauguration speech of Joe Biden and the Make Poverty History speech of Nelson Mandela. The full presentation that contains many practical learnings for NGOs and the social impact sector can be downloaded via the registration form of this page.

Daniel Gamboa, Growth and Fundraising Director at Amnesty International in Argentina, shared a groundbreaking case study of Amnesty’s innovative use of the Metaverse and their iconic Escape to Freedom game to reach new supporters through the Roblox gaming platform — offering a model for how the social impact sector can apply these insights to build trust and engagement with young men in particular.

Using Glocalities data and innovation for empowering NGOs and civil society

The session went beyond theory to practical action. It revealed how data, innovation, and compelling storytelling can be used to reignite connections with disengaged audiences. The insights and cases presented showcase how NGO’s and the social impact sector can take the lead, innovate, step out of its bubble and leverage granular data insights to connect with microcultures. There is an urgent need to develop and communicate compelling and exciting narratives that resonate with the values, ambitions, and ideals of a broad spectrum of critical audiences.

Step by step plan: How to crack and use the code for your mission, country and topic

The Glocalities methodology provides a practical step by step plan and formula for outplaying the authoritarian playbook and how innovative technologies and compelling storytelling can be used to empower civil society and to reconnect with a broad spectrum of audiences, based on solid research data from countries all around the world.

This practical step by step plan is outlined on page 27, 28 and 29 of the presentation that can be downloaded using the registration form at the side of this page.
